From a young age, Victorien S. Deryabin sought to understand the patterns underlying human mental activity and behavior. This pursuit led him to study medicine at the universities of Moscow, Yuryev, and Munich (1895–1908), followed by specialization in psychiatry at the University of Moscow (1909). Dissatisfied with the state of psychiatry at the time, he turned to physiological research. Between 1912 and 1914, he completed a dissertation in the laboratories of Ivan Pavlov, which he defended in 1917 for the Doctor of Medicine degree. From 1920 to 1927, he worked in psychiatric clinics and at the Department of Nervous and Mental Diseases of Tomsk University. There, the study of initial conditions in patients with epidemic encephalitis sharpened his interest in cortical-subcortical relationships and affectivity. In 1927, he organized the Department of Psychiatry in Irkutsk, where he worked until 1933, when he returned to physiological research in the scientific departments led by L. A. Orbeli. From 1941 to 1944, Deryabin worked at the clinic of nervous diseases of the Sverdlovsk Medical Institute, managing the ward for the seriously wounded. In 1944, he returned to Leningrad and worked at the Pavlov Institute of Physiology, and subsequently in the individual research group of Academician L. A. Orbeli (1944–1955). The article focuses specifically on his first monograph in Russia, Feelings, Inclinations and Emotions (1928–1929), the priority of Deryabin’s psychophysiological research in the field of affectivity, and his studies of philosophical issues, including the psychophysiological problem and the role of needs in social psychology.
