In the 19th century, a unique multi‑stage system of pedagogical education institutions was established within the framework of the Saint Petersburg Imperial Foundling House, in which specialized institutions — primarily aimed at training teachers, nannies, medical assistants, and midwives — occupied an important place. Russian educational institutions for the training of primary school teachers followed the model of the Teacher Seminary. Thus, Women’s School was designed to prepare pupils for admission to courses for Russian nannies, medical assistants, and rural teachers. The Nanny School and the Medical Assistant (Feldsher) School — the first female educational institutions of their kind in Europe — represented a wholly unique pedagogical experience. The creation of nurseries and kindergartens‑shelters completed the formation of a unified structure for comprehensive preschool education within the Foundling House. The Maternity Institute trained midwives on the basis of advanced principles of clinical education. In all these educational institutions, rigorous natural science training was provided, a focus that stemmed both from their specific profiles and from the continuation of the educational traditions of the Saint Petersburg Imperial Foundling House, where physiology as a fundamental pillar of pedagogical education always occupied a key position. The educational process aimed to cultivate an integral, all-rounded personality, with considerable attention devoted to physical and hygienic education. The adoption of modern teaching methods contributed to the attainment of advanced positions in Russian pedagogy and paediatrics in the interests of the individual, family, society, and the state.
